PAY RANGE

$145,000 - $155,000 Annual Salary - Pay based on applicable experience and qualifications

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Corporate Accounting Manager reports to the Assistant Corporate Controller and is responsible for the timely financial close and accurate reporting of the financial results of all entities in each portfolio in compliance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States (GAAP) and MidPen Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual. The Corporate Accounting Manager demonstrates solid understanding of both the details of financial statements and the “big picture”. In addition, the Corporate Accounting Manager prepares analytical review narratives for month end close, quarterly Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A) and other memoranda for annual audit, tax and corporate budget. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, advanced technical accounting knowledge, and sharp critical thinking and analytical skills are essential. This position supervises staff accountants and assists with the recruitment and development of talented employees.

As the Corporate Accounting Manager you will work closely with a variety of team members in Accounting & Finance, Property Management, Asset Management, Resident Services, Development as well as the executive team at MidPen. Success in the role will be measured by the ability maintain and balance the technical aspects of the role, support and create internal controls and policy of the organization, demonstrate strong leadership to direct team members and across the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly analytical review narrative for the executive team and quarterly MD&A for the Finance & Asset Management Committee and other memoranda for annual audit, tax, and corporate budget
  • Responsible for reviewing monthly account reconciliations and financial statements
  • Responsible for both quarterly and annual consolidations to ensure proper allocation and elimination of all intercompany transactions
  • Proactively research and document findings and conclusions on accounting issues with appropriate understanding of relevant GAAP pronouncements
  • Work with external auditors to ensure timely completion of audits and tax returns of the assigned portfolio. Monitor adherence to audit requirements and ensure full compliance in accordance with regulatory agencies
  • Review audit schedules and work papers prepared by staff accountant. Review or prepare footnotes to the financial statements. Assist with the review of the audit reports to ensure audit adjustments are recorded properly and analysis/documentation is completed
  • Concisely present financial information and appropriately answer accounting questions to management and committee members, as requested
  • Develop and execute recommendations for effective and efficient business processes
  • Assist in the maintenance of the MidPen Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual and ensure proper segregation of duties
  • Manage and assist with the coaching of a high-performing professional accounting team
  • Actively participate in any departmental training and education programs
  • Identify areas where training is needed and assist in the developing appropriate training materials
  • Participate in cross-functional projects and/or special projects as opportunities arise
  • Ensure timely update and recording of cash flows to and from the MidPen corporate entities
  • Prepare payroll and related journal entries for upload to ERP
  • Manage the treasury and cash reporting functions
  • Provide ad hoc reporting, analytical and reconciliation, as requested
  • Able to handle all staff accountant essential job functions
  • Perform other assignments, as requested

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS in Accounting or related field
  • MBA/CPA or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum seven (7) years of progressive experience in financial analysis and accounting. Experience in managing accounting processes and procedures
  • Experience in accounting for partnerships, not-for-profit organizations and/or related party transactions a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced technical accounting knowledge and application of GAAP
  • Advanced MS Office skills. Working knowledge of ERP accounting systems, such as, RealPage, AvidXchange, preferred
  • Confident, self-starter with strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other departments
  • High degree of accuracy, accountability, and consistency in producing quality work
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment, with expectation of increasing responsibility and scope over time as proficiency in position develops
  • Welcomes challenging/complex projects and demonstrates an ability for working smarter not harder by making continuous improvement to the efficiency of processes
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring employees highly desired
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with sharp business acumen and critical thinking skills
  • Must have valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of current auto insurance policy

Physical Requirements

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, frequently sitting
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 15 pounds
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl
